And while it can be a lot of fun to pick out your new kitchen or the new floors for your bathroom, it also requires your full attention. That’s a luxury members with children don’t always have.

The 23 DirectBuy franchises serving Canada in seven provinces—Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario and Saskatchewan—have developed a “Kids Zone” area in their respective clubs so parents can focus on the task at hand and kids can enjoy the DirectBuy experience, too.

Though not a supervised area, the Kids Zone features a number of things to keep school-age children occupied and entertained: books, puzzles and games. The Kids Zone also includes a flat screen television so children of members can watch movies or play video games.

“Let’s face it, most kids would rather go to the dentist than watch their parents shop for their next home improvement project. By the same token, it’s difficult for members with children to get the most out of the experience and do the research they need to do if they’re concerned about the kids getting fidgety. The Kids Zone gives children of DirectBuy members a place to play games, watch TV or even make new friends with other members’ kids while the grown-ups have their ‘fun’,” said Jade Allen, co-owner of DirectBuy of Vancouver.

Creating fun things to do for children is nothing new for DirectBuy. DirectBuy franchises across North America regularly donate equipment to youth organizations like the Boys & Girls Clubs, YMCAs and children’s hospitals.

“Because we are entrenched in the local community, we have an even greater incentive to make this a one-of-a-kind, unique shopping experience because many of the members are our friends, neighbors, even relatives,” said Allen. “The Kids Zone and donations to youth groups are just an extension of that philosophy.”

Even more so. To that end, DirectBuy, the leading members-only showroom and home design centers in Canada, offers some helpful tips on setting up your home office.

For starters, DirectBuy recommends drawing a floor plan of the room or area where your home office will be. Your floor plan should include markings of where the electrical outlets are and accurate measurements of the heights of the windows, doorways and any closet space to give you additional design options.

“If you’re going to be spending significant time in your home office, from eight to 20 hours a week or more, you’re going to want a space that’s a little more comfortable, functional and aesthetically pleasing than the spare room or corner of a room that’s passed for a home office in years past,” said Peter Ruetz, co-owner of DirectBuy of Greater Vancouver. “Many of our members work with our designers to create not just a comfortable workspace for one or members of the household, but also a room you’ll want to show off to guests.”

Some of the things you may want to consider in planning your office space:

? Ergonomic chairs, desks, and other office pieces.

? Lower shelves so you can reach for books, folders and other items without strain.

? Lighting under workspace shelves to make it easier to read.

? A mount or platform for your computer monitor so you can look at the screen without tilting your head up or down.

? Neutral soothing colors for your walls like teal blues, soft cool grays and warm Tuscan colors to create the work atmosphere you’re looking for.

? How much natural light does the room get and how much do you want? Do you prefer curtains to blinds? There are a wide range of innovative blinds, sheers, louvers and shutters to achieve the look you want.

? The depth of the pieces you’re putting in your office. There’s nothing worse than trying to add a desk to spot that fits length- and width-wise but leaves no room for the chair.

? Installing additional outlets to give you more layout and design options.

? Avoiding wall-to-wall carpeting if possible; offices are high traffic areas and wear will show on your rugs the more time you work at home. Use carpet tiles for the areas you want carpeting, so that you can replace them if they fade or show stains, and use hardwood or ceramic tile for the rest of the space.

DirectBuy carries a large selection of brand-name office furniture at wholesale prices direct from the manufacturers and their authorized suppliers. In addition, DirectBuy also employs product specialists and designers who can help members create the home office that works best for their individual needs and for family members if it’s a shared workspace.

DirectBuy, the leading members-only showroom and home design centers in Canada, not only sells “outdoor kitchen” units and other accessories at manufacturer’s low prices, but also offers some helpful pointers on selecting the right equipment and setup for your home.

For starters, when it comes to selecting a grill, DirectBuy recommends considering:

? Stainless steel gas or charcoal grills – outdoor kitchen means just that: outside! Sun, rain, wind and, in Canada, snow. Even covered, your grill will be exposed to the elements to a certain degree and you want a grill made of material that will withstand bad weather and corrosion.

? Free-standing or under-the-counter refrigeration units – help minimize trips to the “other” kitchen and gives you a place to store leftovers for the next cookout.

? Infra-red burners – make sure the grill you do select uses infra-red burners, which heat up faster.

? Storage – choose a grill with plenty of shelving and cabinets

“The beauty of the outdoor kitchen is it reduces trips to the real kitchen to get supplies. This means you can actually spend time with your guests while preparing your meal. That’s why it’s just as important when selecting your outdoor kitchen to not forget the comfort of your guests,” said Steve Pippy, co-owner of DirectBuy of Greater Vancouver. “DirectBuy also gives members the opportunity to save a lot of money by buying furniture for their outdoor kitchen, directly from the manufacturer.”

When it comes to selecting furniture for your outdoor “dining room,” there are a number of options in terms of style—sling, metal, cushioned and strapped to name a few–and materials—aluminum, iron, resin, teak, wood, wicker, fabric and vinyl. More choices mean more decisions on materials, fabrics and colors. DirectBuy not only has great outdoor furniture at manufacturer-direct prices, but also designers who can help you make some of those decisions.

“One safe rule of thumb is unless you’re planning to buy an entire set of outdoor furniture at once, stick with neutral colors like white, taupe or sandstone. Even if the shades aren’t a perfect match, it won’t matter if there’s a little distance between items, ” said Pippy.

Most people want to know what they can do to make their dollar go further, particularly when purchasing household appliances. While most consumers have their eyes on the price tag, it really should be on how much it costs to power those appliances, and that’s where ENERGY STAR comes in.

ENERGY STAR is the international symbol of premium energy efficiency. Natural Resources Canada’s Office of Energy Efficiency (OEE) promotes the international ENERGY STAR symbol in Canada and monitors its use. Typically, ENERGY STAR products offer 20 to 30 percent savings on your energy bills. DirectBuy of Ottawa, the leading home improvement and furnishings club with direct insider prices, sells a wide ride range of ENERGY STAR products to help members save.

“The irony about ENERGY STAR products is the program itself was set up to combat the negative effect that running our appliances was having on our environment,” said Lise Girard, owner of DirectBuy of Ottawa. “While most people do want to minimize their carbon footprint, in today’s economy, it’s just as much about how much you can save by having appliances that run more efficiently.”

So, how much can you save by purchasing ENERGY STAR appliances? Here’s a small sampling:

Clothes washers – replacing a 10-year-old washing machine with a new ENERGY STAR machine can save a household more than $160 per year.

Dishwashers – ENERGY STAR dishwashers use 41 percent less energy and water than non-ENERGY STAR washers. That translates to more than $30 a year on your utility bill.

Refrigerators – a typical two-door, freezer-on-top refrigerator can cost more than $110 per year to run. Upgrading to ENERGY STAR can knock $30 per year off that, resulting in savings of nearly $400 in just five years.

Home electronics – the average household spends more than $100 per year powering electronics devices in “standby” mode. ENERGY STAR products use less energy when in standby.

LED Lighting – requires 75 percent less energy than incandescent bulbs and lasts 25 times longer. According to Natural Resources Canada, LED lighting can last more than 25,000 hours than its incandescent counterparts or more than 22 years!

In addition to those savings, Canadians who replace their cooling or heating systems with ENERGY STAR systems are eligible for grants up to $5,000 from the federal government. Grant information can be found on the Office of Energy Efficiency Web site at oee.nrcan.gc.ca/.

Canadian residents who replace their heating systems might also be eligible for a Home Renovation Tax Credit for the 2009 tax year. The credit applies to expenditures more than $1,000 and less than $10,000, with the credit being no more than $1,350 per family. For eligibility guidelines, please visit the Home Tax Renovation Credit page on the Canadian Revenue Agency’s Web site at cra-arc.gr.ca.

“As a company that deals specifically in home improvement, we often hear the expression that this project will pay for itself, but that usually means at resale of your home,” said Girard. “When it comes to ENERGY STAR products, they literally do pay for themselves over time—without selling your home—and lessen the impact on the environment. That’s really an unbeatable combination.”

DirectBuy carries a large selection of ENERGY STAR products and appliances at wholesale prices direct from manufacturers or their authorized suppliers. In addition, each DirectBuy club employs product specialists and designers who can help members select the appliance that works best for their home.

Since 1971, DirectBuy clubs have offered members the opportunity to enjoy enormous savings on home furnishings, home improvement items, entertainment and outdoor products and accessories by buying wholesale, directly from the manufacturer. With locations all across Canada, consumers can enjoy a comfortable, country-club setting, where they finally have the financial control of buying direct.

GLOUCESTER, ONTARIO…

In late 2008, Lise and Regis Girard joined the ownership team and continued the winning tradition, ranking number two in Merchandise Sales for 2009 among Canadian DirectBuys—including a top ranking for merchandise sales among Canadian clubs for the month of May. Additionally, Ottawa has ranked in the top 5 for all clubs for membership sales in each of the past 6 months.

“The growth we’ve experienced since we opened our doors five years ago is a little hard to fathom. Not only have we grown in terms of the number of our members, but also in the number of manufacturers who want to sell their products through DirectBuy,” said Regis Girard, co-owner of DirectBuy of Ottawa. “In finishing first in merchandise sales for May, I couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate our anniversary. Frankly, I’m even more excited about the next five years.”

As the leading members-only home improvement and home furnishings club, DirectBuy of Ottawa offers direct insider pricing on products ranging from light fixtures to televisions to kitchen cabinets, all from more than 500 manufacturers and their authorized suppliers. DirectBuy also offers design services to its members, as well as a listing of local contractors who offer installation services to DirectBuy members, many times at a discounted rate.

“Our five years in business have not only given us the opportunity to help families create the home of their dreams, but to also establish ourselves as part of the local business community and as a contributor to local charities,” said Girard. “We look forward to further cultivating those relationships with our customers and the community as we build toward even bigger and better things in the years to come.”

DirectBuy of Ottawa has helped consumers enjoy enormous savings on home furnishings, home improvement items, entertainment and outdoor products, and accessories, by providing an avenue to purchase directly from the manufacturer. Conveniently located at 1392 Cyrville, Road in Gloucester, Ontario, DirectBuy offers consumers a comfortable, country-club setting, where they finally have the financial control of buying direct.

GLOUCESTER, ON…

“When I received the letter in the mail notifying me that I was DirectBuy’s $25,000 Grand Prize Home Makeover winner, I didn’t think it was real,” said Logue. “It wasn’t until I called the DirectBuy corporate headquarters that I realized I had truly won.”

Excited about her newfound fortune, Logue didn’t waist any time figuring out how she would spend it all. In fact, Logue replaced her living room carpet with brand new hardwood flooring before she even received her grand prize check.

“The actual ceremony and check presentation was weeks away and I couldn’t wait to start making improvements to my home and life,” said Logue.

This fall, Logue also plans on replacing her kitchen flooring with granite tile. She is looking forward to the arrival of family to help with the project.

Even though her home improvement projects are first and foremost, Logue is also planning a vacation in the island country of Cuba.

Regis and Lise Girard, who own the Ottawa location, were excited that their club was able to help someone from their community.

“We are so happy that our club was one of the lucky ones to have a Home Makeover winner,” said Lise Girard, co-owner of DirectBuy of Ottawa. “It was a great experience for our staff, members and visitors. We will never forget Deborah and we wish her the best with her new home improvement projects.”

Over the past few years, DirectBuy has distributed more than a half million dollars in prize money to both members and non-members as part of their Home Makeover Program, designed to help consumers create the home of their dreams.

OTTAWA, ON…

“We are extremely proud to have received this prestigious award. Helping our members to realize their dreams is remarkably rewarding for us as DirectBuy franchise owners,” said co-owner Lise Girard. “However, we would not have accomplished these lofty goals without the support of our knowledgeable and devoted staff. We would like to share this award with each and every one of our employees.”

DirectBuy centres had the opportunity to qualify for Sales Centre of the Year by introducing families to the DirectBuy concept, and were recognized for the number of families they helped join DirectBuy for the months of November 2007 through October 2008.

For their accomplishment, DirectBuy of Ottawa earned on-stage and video recognition at DirectBuy’s International Sales & Service Conference, a plaque celebrating their success, and acknowledgment in BuyLines – the company’s network-wide newsletter.
